So, as I sat in the Theatre at Ace Hotel, I was pre-fangirling before she even got on the stage. She reminded me that we really have no idea what’s going on with someone until we have a conversation with them, and even still, may not know. I absolutely loved the way she wrote about her own experience with sexual violence and it was also a book that forever impacted the way I think about bodies and commenting on other people’s bodies. I was in the thick of PTSD related to childhood sexual trauma, and I had only just begun therapy for it. I first read an excerpt from Hunger at the perfect (and you could say most difficult) time. Prior to that evening, I was very familiar with Roxane Gay, someone I don’t personally think needs an intro but will give if you haven’t heard of her: she is the author of Bad Feminist and Hunger, as well as a professor, editor, and more.
